Abstract

Kazeroun is a city located in the Fars province in Iran. An accent of Persian called “Kazerouni” is spoken in this city. The raising of the low vowel /A/ to the high vowel [o] in different environments is a common phonological/ morphophonological process in this accent. This research aimed at analyzing the environments and processes that cause this vowel raising. The analysis of the data indicated that this process occurs in the following three environments: before [h] and the suffix –i, before the Ezafe enclitic in the words ending with //, and before the Ezafe enclitic in the words ending with /h/. The analysis of the first and second environments was conducted within the classic Optimalith Theory (OT) (Prince & Smolensky, 1993/2004). However, the third environment was analyzed using the stratal OT due to the interface of phonology and morphology. The results of this research indicate that the phonological/ morphophonological processes which cause the raising of /A/ to [o] in different environments in the Kazerouni accent include attachment of the suffix –i and the Ezafe enclitic, insertion of the intervocalic consonant [j] to resolve hiatus, and /h/ deletion.
